POLICIES

I feel it is important that you  know what is expected of you and what you can expect from me. I will provide a safe learning environment, that will take into account all learning styles and needs, so that all can be successful. I am fair, fun, and easy to get along with as long as you treat me with the same respect I will give you. If you need help or need to speak to me, I am always available before and after class, during study and via email.

Rules and Consequences

I have four simple rules and they were designed to minimize distractions to students and ensure student success.

1.  Raise your hand to speak. No calling out unless prompted.

2. Listen carefully  and respectfully during directions, direct instruction, and Powerpoint presentations. No interruptions.

3. Remain in seat at all times unless you ask.

4. Give 100%. Respect yourself and others.

CONSEQUENCES:

1. A non-verbal gesture--this could be a look or a tap on the desk to refocus you.

2. A private conversation either quietly at your desk or in the hall if time allows.

3. If behavior doesn't improve, an after school retention is issued and a phone call or email home.

4. A meeting is set up with the parents/ student may be referred to the office.

Homework/bathroom Policy

Homework is assigned daily and usually due the following day. On occasion I may need to assign homework over the weekend, but as a policy I try to leave your weekends for pleasure. Sometimes homework is collected and graded, sometimes students hold on to it to use it for an additional extension activity, and sometimes it is checked for completeness via walk through(like outlines, which are assessed in other ways).

Students may turn in homework in study on the day it is due to receive full credit. Any work turned in the following day will be half credit. After that, a zero is issued. Repeat offenders may receive a lunch retention. All homework is posted in the classroom as well as on MMS.

BATHROOM:

I ask that students wait until they are doing independent work to go to the bathroom so that they don't miss instruction or directions.

Materials

One of our primary goals for 8th graders is to teach them life skills that they can take with them to high school and college. The materials we ask for enable us to teach our students note taking  and organizational strategies. We ask for the following items(these are for all major subjects--we've consolidated it for you:

1. many pencils and pens

2. art materials--colored pencils, markers OR crayons.

3. ruler and eraser

4. hand held pencil sharpener

5. pleasure reading book

6. USB flash drive

7. a few three ring binders--you can combine with another subject(if you already bought spiral notebooks--see below for instructions)

8. a folder with pockets

9. filler paper

10. calculator

11. red pen

12. hole punch protectors

If you already bought spiral notebooks, either rip out the pages and place them in a 3 ring binder( I have some if you need one) or place actual notebook in binder and take out notes as we go.
